IQ can be polished

A new study has found that it may be possible to train people to be more intelligent, increasing the brainpower they had at birth.

Until now, it had been widely assumed that the kind of mental ability that allows us to solve new problems without having any relevant previous experience is innate and cannot be taught.

But, in the new study researchers describe a method for improving this skill.

First they measured the fluid intelligence of four groups of volunteers using standard tests.

Then they trained each in a memory task, a variation on Concentration, the child's card game.

The four groups underwent a half-hour of training daily for 8, 12, 17 and 19 days respectively. At the end of each training, researchers tested the participants fluid intelligence again.

The results, published on Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences were striking.

Although the control groups also made gains, presumably because they had practice with the fluid intelligence tests, improvement in the trained groups was substantially greater. Moreover, the longer they trained, the higher their scores were.

This new finding crushes the former belief that intelligence has always been considered an immutable inherited trait.

IAF Mirage 2000s- to be overhauled

The Indian Air Force's Mirage- 2000H fighters will soon be upgraded as the Ministry of Defence has invited bids from French company Dassault for overhauling the ongoing fleet.

The French company will now submit its proposal on how much the upgradation will cost. The contract involves reviewing 51 multi-role fighters. The Mirage-2000 will be upgraded to the level of Mirage 2000-9 with better avionics and new instrumentation that will enhance its lifespan by another 25 years.

Mirage-2000, a delta wing fighter with fly-by-wire system and flight control panels is a potent component of the Indian Air Force. Its easy handling, agility and relatively simpler maintenance has made it a hit in the force.

The IAF has three squadrons of Mirage-2000s. Over the years, the aircraft has kept pace with changing technologies.

The new Mirage will have better compatibility to take on multiple targets.

With procurement of new aircraft taking time, the IAF is desperate to get the old ones overhauled so that security is not compromised.

Another 'row'

After their skimpy outfits created a furore among the country's politicians, the Indian Premier League(IPL) cheerleaders have now 'covered up' to ensure that there are no more controversies.

The cheerleaders were clad in their new attire for the IPL matches, starting with the game between Delhi Daredevils and Kings XI Punjab in Mohali and it certainly left less room for complaints.

The cheerleaders said 'We will wear what our management tells us to wear. If they want us to be covered up, we are more than happy to do that ' said one of them.

Every IPL team has a cheerleading squad and most of them have been brought from abroad.

All set to fire- into space

The European Union was set to launch the second satellite in its much- delayed Galileo navigation system designed to rival the American GPS system.

Named Giove-B, the satellite will test technologies to be used in the Galileo system including an atomic clock that the EU says will be the most accurate in space.

Touted as technologically superior to GPS, Galileo is scheduled to be operational by 2013.

Senior EU officials were monitoring the launch of Giove-B from the Fucino control centre in central Italy.

Galileo promises to more than double existing GPS coverage, providing navigation for motorists, sailorss, pilots and emergency rescue teams. It would improve coverage in high-latitude areas such as northern Europe and in big cities where sky-scrapers can block signals.

Economy

An economy, 'one who manages a household', derived from the noun 'house' is the realized system of human activities related to the production, distribution, exchange and consumption of goods and services of a country or other area.

The composition of a given economy is inseparable from technological evolution, civilization's history and social organization as well as from Earth's geography and ecology. Economy refers also to the measure of how a country or region is progressing in terms of product.

Ancient times

The ancient economy was mainly based on subsistence farming. For most people the exchange of goods occurred through social relationships. There were also traders who bartered in the marketplaces. In Ancient Greece, when the word'economy' arose, many people were bond slaves of the freeholders. Aristotle was the first to differentiate between a use value and an exchange value of goods.

Middle Ages

In Medieval times, most exchange occurred within social groups. The discoveries of Marco Polo, Christopher Colombus and Vasco Da Gama led to a first global economy. In 1513 the first stock exchange was founded in Antwerpen.

Early modern times

The European captures become branches of the European states, the so-called colonies. The rising nation-states Spain, Portugal, France, Great Britain and the Netherlands tried to control the trade through custom duties and taxes in order to protect their national economy. Economy, from then on meant national economy as a topic for the economic activities of the citizens of a state.

The industrial revolution

The first economist in the true meaning of the word was the Scotsman Adam Smith. He defined the elements of a national economy: productsss are offered at a natural price generated by the use of competition-supply and demand and the division of labor. He maintained that the basic motive for free trade is human self-interest. The so-called self interest hypothesis became the anthropological basis for economics. The period today is called industrial revolution because the system of production and division of labor enabled the mass production of goods.

Capitalism and Communism

Starting in England, simultaneous related processes of mechanization, led to increases in wealth for the controllers of capital and mass poverty, starvation , urbanization and pauperization for much of the population. This led some, such as Karl Marx and the German industrialist and philosopher Friedrich Engels to describe economy as the 'system of capitalism'. The exploitation of labor and nature by the capitalist is creating a surplus value. The capital will accumulate itself and finally destroy the competition. Therefore the system of communism should liberate the economy from the reign fo capital. The first centrally planned economy was established after the Russian Revolution of 1917 by Lenin.

Lull in crime

There is a sudden dip in crime rate in Bangalore city and its' neighbourhood. Besides, there's a lull in gang wars and serial murders also.

Police attribute it all to their tightened vigil.

Criminal lawyer Satish Chandra says that the run-up to the polls has left criminals and mafia elements occupied with other activities.

'Criminals are busy studying the newly delimited constituency maps, elected lists and booths. Some are run aspiring to get tickets and are seen flocking party offices from dusk to dawn.'

The police continued their crackdown on rowdy elements for the second day on Monday.

According to police records, there are 1,780 rowdy- sheeters in Bangalore city alone.

The police have also asked licensed weapon holders to surrender their arms and leave them with jurisdictional police from April 17 to May 30.

Till Monday evening, nearly 261 weapons had been deposited in the city police stations and in the days to come these numbers are sure to swell.

Women- the endangered species

Nicole Kidman urged world leaders and ordinary people to join the global fight to end violence against women.

The actress, said the violence was probably the 'most widespread human rights violation of our time.'

The 40-year old Australian star became a good-will ambassador in January 2006 for the UN Development Fund for Women, known as UNIFEM.

Kidman urged people of all nations to add their names and demand 'that ending violence against women be made a top priority for governments everywhere'.

One in three women will encounter violence in someway, shape or form against them in their life-time ', Kidman told a newsconference at the UN headquarters. 'That's an extraordinaray statistic . Yet do we hear it?'.

India firms stance on uranium enrichment programme

India rejected US advice on talking tough with Iran on suspending its uranium enrichment activities in line with the UN Security Council's demands saying it needed no 'guidance' from anyoen on the matter.

The Bush Administration had hoped New Delhi would ask Iran to 'become a more responsible actor on the world stage' by ending its 'rather unhelpful activities' regarding Iraq and support for terrorism.

Casey, however, said it was upto India to decide how to 'manage' its bilateral ties with Iran.

Its' message was 'We would hope that the Indian Government, or any government that was engaging with the Iranians, would call on him to meet the requirements that the Security Council and the international community has placed on him in terms of suspending their uranium enrichment activities and complying with other requirements regarding their nuclear programme'.

Ahmadinejad will be in New Delhi on a short visit on April 29 on his way to Sri Lanka and have talks with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

He will be the first Iranian head of State to visit India in five years.

Hillary likely to withdraw from race

Several party leaders are asserting that the vicious presidential hopefuls Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama is doing damage to the ability of the Democratic party to take on Republican candidate John Mccain. Democratic party leaders are likely to pressurize the former US First Lady to withdraw if she performs badly in the crucial Pennsylvania primary.

Party bosses say if the fight continues until August, the party would lose three crucial months of campaigning.

Meanwhile, Clinton slightly shifted the line of attack on Obama, challenging his ability to manage the country when he is complaining about tough questioning during the debate in which his performance, all analysts agree, was below par.

Film Review

U, Me aur Hum .......sounds odd, but is the name of a movie. Ajay Devgan's tribute to his reel life romance with wifey Kajol.

The film is typical of modern-day peppy romances. Three married couples, their trials and tribulations are dealt with, in the film.

A romantic doctor who falls head over heels in love with waitress, Piya, how he seeks to win over her hand in marriage, the mocks he faces from friends and ship-mates, the agonies he goes through to convincehis love are well-portrayed in the movie.

The second half is more gripping than the first. He copes with a serious illness his wife suffers and promises to keep his marriage vows of never 'abandoning her'. The story is in the form of a 'flashback'. And, we are treated to scenes of the hero and heroine past their prime as well as a zany youthful twosome.

The movie certainly generates interest by its unusual 'title' but bears no resemblance to the recent hit 'Jab we met' as one may speculate .

Heaven on earth

Swaroop Devaiyya runs a Montessori school in my locality. It is named 'Priyadarshini Montessori School'.

This Montessori school is a 'Pre-school or Play-school'. As Madame Montessori envisaged, there is no force or pressure on children here.

Children love going to school in the morning. Their mothers don't have to cajole them into going to school. They don't have to sit down to study immediately. There is no homework. Children are free to take their own sweet time to settle down. They have a marvelous time in this school.

It's an expensive school. Not everyone can afford it and children from priveleged families attend this school. Any doting parent would love to have his child a good education and this school provides a good, solid foundation. An ideal base for a child to have a good start in life.

There is no school uniform. Children in bright clothes ride to school with their parents and pass time among various educational and play devices. They learn to spot colors, point out animals and make clay figures. Some children are slow in settling down, whilst others take the transition easily.

This school has a good reputation. Her children have done very well in their middle-school years and high school.

A Montessori child is a poor specimen for analysis, says the Principal Swaroop Devaiyya.

The parents are delighted. Children look forward to going to school every day. They imitate their teacher and chant 'Swaroop Aunty says this or Swaroop Aunty says that'. Children get job satisfaction going about their tasks in school.

At snack- time, they relish the delicacies sent lovingly by their mothers. They relax by watching cartoons on the video. 'Play-time' follows and a long walk in the neighbourhood.

But all is not play. The teachers keep their eye on the children and their progress and prepare meticulous reports about each child's activities. Some children do very well , others lag behind. They learn their numbers on the abacus.

All the children who come to this school confess to love it. They look forward to coming to school every day. Birthdays are special affairs, each child is made to feel good. As everyone knows, a good 'self-esteem' does wonders for one's well-being and this school purports to do exactlly that.

Indian cricketing team: come of age

India snatches a victory or two in its encounters with foreign teams in cricket. It's highs may be flash-in-the pan affairs but these days an element of professionalism has crept in. They do fight back.

If they do not take an early lead, they bounce back to show signs of resistance.

Certain individuals have carved out a name for themselves in the game of cricket. Sachin Tendulkar , Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and V.V.S. Laxman can be cited. They are instrumental in a few cases of guiding the team to victory.

When India wins, there is talk of the highly 'plausible'. Whether India is no.1 or no.2 in cricket in the world. But as soon as they are raised on a pedestal 'crash' comes down the 'red flag'. India plummet to an innings defeat against South Africa. They may not be world-beaters but they have proved they have what it takes to 'fight back'.

A phenomenon- that is of parakeets

Thousands of parakeets have made an abode for themselves, bang in the middle of Bangalore's crowded K.R.marke, their home.

This ornithological wonder- barely 100 feet from the City Market flyover which is notoriously noisy -is drawing huge crowds.

Seasoned bird- watchers and ornithologists alike are a surprised lot.

Dawn and dusk are the most busy hours around the temple. Yet, that is hardly a bother for the birds.

According to bird experts, the parakeet is a social being whcih lives in groups. He said the birds might have come here for security reasons. They usually feel secure from predators when people are around. Two kinds of parakeets are sighted here including the common rose ringed parakeet ( with rose ring around the neck) and uncommon blossom headed parakeet ( yellow color on tail).

Film Review

Race is not exactly about fast-paced cars in action but has all the ingredients of a thriller.

Rivalry, jealousy between siblings constitute the theme of the movie. Born into money, the film is all about 'who' is the lucky one to have a pick of the 'moolah'.

The femme fatale is none other than Bipasha Basu and Katrina Kaif plays the other female lead. They are not mere decorative pieces but indicate a piece of their mind by taking part in the action. The love interests are slightly confusing as the female leads change loyalties.

Saif Ali Khan fits into the role as a glove and Akshaye Khanna complements him neatly as the ungrateful brother.

The movie belongs to Saif Ali Khan and emerges unscathed after all the action. Twists and turns keep us gripping our seats and the end is unpredictable and comes as a surprise.

Paintings around a theme

Behind every painting is a figure. Fine strokes of brush create a piece of art. These strokes are the expression of a soul striving to express itself.

Picasso gave vent to his feelings on various political and economic issues through his dexterity with paint.

The latest exhibition in Mangalore revolves around Christainity's iconic god figure Jesus Christ. The Lord's Last Supper depicts the story behind it.

Jesus and his disciples were now at the supper table and he breaks the bread, gives it to his disciples and says' this is my body which is given for you. Every time you eat bread think of me. Jesus takes a cup of wine and gives it to the disciples and Jesus asks them to drink from the cup and says.

'This wine is my blood that will be shed to remove the sins of all who come to believe in me and it is the start of a new agreement between God and mankind'.

These words symbolize the teachings of Christ- His commandments of love, sacrifice and universal brotherhood. The subject of Last Supper has been painted in so many ways through the ages and is one of dear to the Christains throughout the world. The well-known artists of Mangalore have explored the subject in a unique manner and in a distinct style.
